Peel-Harvey

The Peel-Harvey catchment is the most northern catchment of the South West NRM Region, located immediately south and south-east of Perth, and covering an area of almost 1.5 million ha. This catchment encompasses the Serpentine, Harvey and Murray River systems and supports the largest estuarine system in the south west – the Peel-Harvey Estuarine System.

Despite extensive clearing, the Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary are defining characteristics of the Peel-Harvey Catchment and together form a large shallow basin of approximately 130 km2 – almost two and a half times the size of the Swan River estuary.

The Peel-Harvey Estuarine system supports three Wetlands of International Significance under the Ramsar Convention including, Peel-Yalgorup System, Thompsons Lake and Becher Point wetlands.

The Peel-Yalgorup system is the largest and most complex estuarine system within the south west, covering approximately 21,000 ha. Lake Clifton – one of the Yalgorup lakes, is a highlight of this catchment being home to the largest known living microbialite (thrombolite) community in the southern hemisphere. These thrombolites are one of the earliest known life on Earth.

The Peel-Harvey catchment is also home to a significant number of threatened flora and fauna, including several Threatened Ecological Communities. Some threatened fauna found in the catchment include:

  • Woylie
  • Chuditch
  • Red-tailed Phascogale.

In addition, over 130 bird species have been recorded within the catchment with few using the Peel-Harvey waterways for breeding, and both native and migratory birds using the waterways as a significant feeding and habitat area.
