Peel Coastal Hotspot Project

Declining water quality and subsequent severe algal blooms in the Peel Inlet-Harvey Estuarine System led to the development of the Water Quality Improvement Plan for the Rivers and Estuary of the Peel-Harvey System – Phosphorus Management (WQIP).

Our team is implementing the recommendations of this document through the Coastal Environmental Hotspots Project.

The main componants of the projects are:

Education and Capacity building

  • Engaging, coordinating and up-skilling land managers/farmers
  • Changing behaviours associated with fertiliser use in urban and agricultural context
  • Workshops e.g. nutrient management, farm soil mapping and property planning

Technical advice

  • Farm visits
  • Resource sharing – fact sheets, information brochures and DVD’s

On-ground activities and devolved grants to achieve Best Management Practices (BMPs) such as:

  • Stock access management (fencing, off stream watering and crossings)
  • Revegetation
  • Wetland Protection
  • Drainage modification
  • Opportunities for volunteers to partake in the implementation of coastal hotspots activities
