Working in NRM, our core business is intrinsically linked with caring for Country, as undertaken by the Traditional Owners of the land, the Nyungar. SWCC is committed to building and strengthening ongoing and meaningful partnerships with local Aboriginal groups and working together to protect cultural heritage and environmental assets.
Zac has developed strong partnerships with three local Nyungar groups; the Woolkabunning Kiaka Association (who manage Roelands Mission), the Bunbury Aboriginal Women’s Association and the Bibulmen Mia Aboriginal Corporation. Working with these groups has facilitated the capture and recording of important traditional knowledge relating to the Preston River Catchment and the Vasse-Wonnerup Wetands and has resulted in fantastic community driven on-ground work to improve the areas.
Below is Zac’s story on how these partnerships were formed…
“The best way to develop these partnerships was taking the time to go out into the Communities mentioned and introduce myself, explain my role at SWCC and to see what they expected from me. We then discussed any issues of concern that fell under my role as an Aboriginal NRM Facilitator.
I physically visited their sites of concern and set up community consultation meetings and workshops, where in-depth discussions, decisions and solutions were recorded. Above all, I have found communication to be the key and I regularly keep in contact with all groups to keep the projects up to date, solve any problems and am be able to go out and visit the areas to see what progress has been made.
I find if I keep in contact, many small problems are not left to swell and become bigger and the Community feels they are a priority, giving them the confidence to elaborate on their projects and expand the vision they have for their Communities.”
