In recognition of the need for our organisation to improve the way in which it uses, stores, collects and disseminates information, SWCC began developing a Knowledge Management Strategy in February 2010.
Community Engagement Project officer Derani Sullivan was charged with the task of developing this strategy. In order to gain skills and knowledge in this discipline, she attended a national training course run by the Australian River Restoration Centre, which was developed with organisations involved in the NRM industry in mind. The course gave the participants the tools and knowledge they would need to facilitate the process of developing a Regional Knowledge Strategy for their organisation. The training provided Derani with an established process to follow and Information and Knowledge Resource Kit to utilise when following the steps to developing SWCC’s strategy.
The process involved three lines of enquiry to understand the current situation within SWCC; Information Mapping; an on-line information and knowledge needs survey for internal SWCC staff and external stakeholders; and a Narrative inquiry, which explored the experiences of staff in managing information and knowledge.
The development of the strategy has enabled SWCC to better track its existing NRM knowledge and identify what is required in the future. The strategy is used to guide our approach to improving access to knowledge and information, for more effective and efficient NRM delivery.
Some of the key recommendations to come out of the strategy included:
As a result of these recommendations, we have recently overhauled our website (as you can see) to improve information flow to our stakeholders, an intranet has been developed to ensure that internal staff communication and information access is improved, we have also developed a Community Engagement Strategy and are currently reviewing our records management system, which needs to be updated and improved to maximize our NRM delivery.
