Grants of up to $20,000 have been available to farmers to undertake on-ground actions aimed at increasing groundcover and reducing the risk of soil loss through wind erosion. Funding has been provided for management actions such as establishing perennial and salt land pastures and revegetation. We currently have 22 projects on the go including over 750 ha of perennial pastures, 150 000 saltbush seedlings, and 50 000 other mixed seedlings which will be established by September 2011. This project is being delivered in partnership with local NRM and Landcare Groups, as well as advisors from Evergreen Farming and DAFWA who provide technical advice and support to our farmers.
With 2010 being such a dry year, ground cover in many areas is sparse and farmers are looking for ways to prevent losing their precious topsoil to wind erosion. Perennial and salt-land pasture species, such as tall wheat grass, kikuyu, tall fescue, lucerne, saltbush and puccinellia, provide an opportunity to defer stock from annual pastures during the late autumn months when overgrazing and wind erosion can be a significant problem.
