Our Sustainable Agriculture Program has a series of exciting workshops and field days planned for the SWCC broadacre region during 2011.
In March 2011, workshops were held in Cuballing and Kojonup introducing the practice of “crop grazing”, where cereal crops are grazed during winter to allow annual pastures a chance to establish. Following on from the initial workshops we have a series of paddock walks during June and July looking at the various stages of grazing crops.
The next walk was held in Kojonup on the 27th of July and Cuballing on the 29th July, and outlined the practical aspects of crop grazing such as calculating feed on offer, stocking rates and grazing lengths. The crop grazing events were delivered in conjunction with the Grain and Graze 2 program and interested farmers should contact Danielle England on 0429 676 077 for more information.
In July 2011, we assisted the Katanning LCDC to hold a full-day workshop aimed at increasing small landholders’ knowledge and skills in pasture management. This event was very well received, and follows on from a series of successful events run by the Katanning LCDC for small landholders in the district.
During the months of August and September events were held with both Southern DIRT and Bugs and Biology relating to the maintenance of groundcover in a wheatbelt cropping / grazing system; and a follow-up workshop with the Blackwood Basin Group reviewing the results of our compost trials in Katanning.
