Citizen Science Forum

WALGA will host a full-day Citizen Science Forum on Tuesday, 26 September 2017 in West Leederville.
Citizen science has grown rapidly in recent years to become a key component of ecological research and biodiversity conservation. The Forum will provide Local Government with information on a range of citizen science programs, and demonstrate how local communities and new technologies have enabled cost-effective collection of credible data, a greater understanding of scientific processes, and increased environmental awareness. The Forum will provide Local Government with information on a range of citizen science programs, and demonstrate how local communities and new technologies have enabled cost-effective collection of credible data, a greater understanding of scientific processes, and increased environmental awareness.
Former WA Chief Scientist Professor Lyn Beazley will provide the keynote address, and will be joined by experts from a number of organisations including the WA Biodiversity Science Institute, the Australian Citizen Science Association WA, the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, the Northern Agricultural Catchments Council, Universities and Local Governments.
The program will include:
• the quality of citizen science data and future research directions
• quenda movement, fungi dispersal and tree health (Backyard Bandicoots)
• biosecurity surveillance for pest detection and reporting (MyPestGuide)
• soil microbial communities and the impact of land use practices (MicroBlitz)
• accurate photo documentation of environmental change (Photomon), and
• sustainable management of fisheries (Prawn Watch) and river health (Dolphin Watch).
