Keep watch for aquatic pests while crabbing

Asian PADDLE CRAB aquatic pest

If you are crabbing over summer, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is calling on you to report any unusual crabs you find.

Senior Management Officer, Marion Massam, said recreational fishers could help prevent the Asian paddle crab from becoming a pest in Australia.  The Asian paddle crab has already invaded New Zealand.

“We need to take extra care to avoid a similar situation in Western Australia,” Ms Massam said.

“Since its detection in Auckland in 2000, the aggressive Asian paddle crab has spread to adjacent estuaries and had also been found over 100 kilometres north in Whangarei.”

“A big thanks to everyone who calls FishWatch with reports of this pest.  Please keep the reports coming on 1800 815 507.”
